Exeter Cathedral to be rebuilt (in LEGO®)

10th November 2015

Exeter Cathedral is embarking on an exciting new project to help raise money to protect and conserve its buildings for future generations. In February 2016 the first of over 300,000 LEGO bricks will be laid on a model commissioned by the Cathedral team.

And everyone is invited to be part of the build team - each brick can be placed on the model for a donation of £1 per brick. The final model will be an impressive 3m long, 1.6m wide and 1m high!

It is anticipated that this project will help the Cathedral raise over a quarter of a million pounds. Alasdair Cameron, Managing Director, said:

"We are always keen to look at new ways in which we can raise money to help us meet annual costs and enable us to care for the fabric of the Cathedral – this is just that sort of fun new way! Cathedrals can often be perceived as very conservative traditional establishments and it is great to bring another element of fun to what we do. "

This project will provide an opportunity for everyone to get involved in helping to preserve, conserve and share Exeter Cathedral from as little as a £1 donation. When the model is complete it will also be used in education work and as a tool for interpretation helping to give people a greater understanding of the Cathedral and the extraordinary way that it was built.

Of course, with a big project such as the LEGO rebuild, there will be lots to do and the team at the Cathedral are looking to recruit a team of volunteers to help with the day to day running (and construction) of the model.
