New St Edward's Canons
Choral Evensong on Sunday 18th September 2016 included the installation of two new “St Edward’s” Canons.
The Right Revd Mark O’Toole (Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Plymouth) and the Revd Graham Thompson (Chair of the Plymouth and Exeter Methodist District) were presented to Bishop Robert and subsequently installed into the Quire of the Cathedral by the Dean.
The position of St Edward’s Canon is an honorary one, allowing the Bishop to mark the contribution of others, normally for denominations outside the Church of England, who contribute to the life of Christ’s people within the area covered by the diocese.
St Edward’s Canons (named to remind us of St Edward the Confessor, Founder of Exeter Cathedral) shall seek to promote the mission of the Church in Devon in partnership with the Bishop, the Diocese and the Cathedral. They are not members of the College of Canons and have no formal role in the governance of the Cathedral, but are invested with a badge of office and are allocated stalls in the Cathedral Quire which they are invited to occupy for major diocesan and cathedral services.
