Pentecost at the Cathedral

Pentecost at the Cathedral

Sunday 15th May 2016 is the feast of Pentecost when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Bishop of Exeter will preach at the 10.00 Choral Eucharist which includes two anthems by 16th century English composer Thomas Tallis (O Lord give thy Holy Spirit and Loquebantur variis linguis) and movements from the Missa bell’ amfitrit’ altera by Orlando Lassus.

At Choral Evensong (16.00) the Cathedral Choir will sing the anthem Come Holy Ghost by contemporary composer Jonathan Harvey. The work takes the plainsong theme Veni, Sancte Spiritus that gives the work its English title and includes a central ‘aleatoric’ section where fragments of the music are sung simultaneously and independently by the performers, representing the disciples speaking in tongues.

The 19.00 service on the 15th May is a celebration, led by the University of Exeter Chapel Choir, in response to the Archbishops’ Call to pray for the evangelisation of our nation.

All are welcome at any of the services in the Cathedral.
