Renowned water colour painter exhibits at Exeter Cathedral
10th October 2014
The renowned watercolourist, Gerard Stamp, who specialises in architectural subjects, is exhibiting his new collection celebrating the 900th anniversary of Exeter Cathedral.
Some of his paintings are in the private collection of actress Dame Judi Dench.
She has said: "I envy anyone coming across these paintings for the first time. They take your breath away."
Mr Stamp said he was inspired by old buildings. "I try to bring these magnificent buildings down to an intimate level, choosing one corner or area for the subject. For me, there is somehow a sense that these buildings are looking down on us, have a soul of their own."
Dean of Exeter Cathedral, the Very Revd Jonathan Draper, said he was honoured that the artist had chosen to bring his exhibition to Exeter, and feature the Cathedral in it.
The exhibition is in the Chapter House of Exeter Cathedral and admission is free with entry to the Cathedral. It runs until the 17th October.
