‘It is to be desired that a Cathedral should be a teaching institution, a lighthouse in the world’
– Spencer Cecil Carpenter, Dean of Exeter (1935 – 1950)

Welcome to Exeter Cathedral, a fascinating and beautiful Cathedral which has, at its heart, a lively religious community. A visit to this ancient building invokes wonder, inspires learning and enriches life.

We welcome school visits throughout the year and offer a variety of options to make each visit enriching and memorable. The Cathedral is a wonderful resource for the study of nearly every subject especially RE, History and Art. We can tailor visits to suit age group and desired learning outcomes.

We offer a programme of themed opportunities, general guided tours and self-led visits. We can also offer lunchrooms and the opportunity to learn about other aspects of the Cathedral e.g. the Library and Archive and Music.

The Cathedral is filled with endless stories and many unusual treasures. We offer lectures, seminars and workshops every month to help unlock these unique tales and collections. To find out how you can discover something new about the Cathedral click here.

During the school holidays why not visit the Cathedral (kids are free!) and get creative! We offer craft sessions and special trails for families during the holidays as well as activity backpacks which are free to rent at any time of year. To see what we have on offer for families click here.

Supporting the Education Department

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF)  awarded Exeter Cathedral £763,000 to support its education and learning programmes over three years.

The grant has enabled a dedicated education space to be created for the first time and allowed the employment of specialist education and archive staff.

Through the project, the former archive space was transformed into a brand new education and learning resource, whilst the ground floor of the Bishop’s Palace now hosts a library and archive, research and display area.
