The construction of a Cathedral in Exeter on the present site began in 1114. It was built in the Norman (Romanesque) style. The two towers and the lower part of the Nave walls survive in the present Cathedral.
A major rebuild, in Decorated Gothic style, was carried out under six bishops between c.1270 and c.1350. The Norman towers were incorporated into this enlarged building as the North and South Transepts.
