Exeter Cathedral Flower Arrangers are a group of happy volunteers who look after all the flowers within the Cathedral. All our members have had different experiences of arranging, but a prerequisite is an understanding of what such a beautiful building requires, and a willingness to work with others as part of a team.
We arrange according to the festivals and requirements of the church year with colours and placements, but there are nine regular sites: the High Altar, the Lady Chapel, four Nave pillars, the Flower Box (outside the Cathedral Shop) the Rifles Chapel and St Gabriel’s, where the Host is kept. Each of these is arranged fortnightly. Additionally, at Festivals, there are extra arrangements needed. We are often asked to create special arrangements for weddings, funerals, celebrations and remembrances – which we are more than happy to do. Occasionally we have a large event to arrange for and bring together many of the team to help. We take part in whole Cathedral events and run a Christmas workshop. During lockdown we were able to keep different silk flowers in the Nave, to maintain some semblance of normality. To ensure consistently high standards, Exeter Cathedral Flower Arrangers are the only arrangers allowed by the Dean and Chapter to operate in the Cathedral.
If you are interested in joining us, please arrange an informal visit in the first instance, by contacting our Volunteers team. We can show you around, talk through your experience or qualifications, and answer any questions you might have. We would love to hear from you!
