We have developed a new 360-degree video experience so that we can share an insight into the world of Exeter Cathedral’s choristers. Anyone with a digital device, whether a smartphone, tablet or laptop, can access our YouTube channel and immerse themselves in the music and architecture of the Cathedral.
This is just a taste of what’s to come. The next stage of our digital journey will see the choir experience brought to life through virtual reality headsets. Soon, anyone visiting the Cathedral in person will be able to wear a headset and enjoy a virtual exploration of the Cathedral’s quire (the choir seating area).
Commenting on the new virtual visitor experience, The Revd Canon James Mustard, Canon Precentor at Exeter Cathedral says: “The sound of the choir in this wonderful medieval setting, with its unique acoustics and atmosphere, is a marvellous experience. We can now bring a taste of that to people, wherever they are in the world, at any time of the day or night.”
The Cathedral team has worked in collaboration with partners at VISTA AR, a digital technology company, and the University of Exeter Business School to embrace innovation and explore new ways for people to access the Cathedral, its experiences and treasures using augmented and virtual reality.
This project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, managed by the Interreg France (Channel) England Programme and led by the University of Exeter. The teaser interactive experience on the Cathedral’s YouTube channel was created by the DPN lab at the European Academy of Art, EESAB, in France.
We hope you enjoy the 360-degree view. Simply click, hold and drag your mouse within the video screen, or use your finger if you are on a phone or tablet.
On some mobile devices, you may need to view on our YouTube channel.
