The Exeter Cathedral bells will ring out this evening, following the 17.30 Evensong, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ‘Representation of the People Act 1918’ – which gave women the vote for the first time.
A quarter peal of 1251 Stedman Cinques will be attempted on our 12 bells (the largest weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, and is the second heaviest ring of bells in the world) by a team made up of women from Devon – especially arranged for the occasion. The eleven Cathedral ringing members, and two regular visitors to the Cathedral will be ringing ‘non-stop’ for over an hour to celebrate the centenary – with two ringing the largest bell.
