Exeter Cathedral awarded Silver by A Rocha's Eco Church Scheme
Exeter Cathedral has been awarded Silver by A Rocha’s Eco Church Scheme, following significant improvements to community engagement and creation care.
Winning aspects of the Cathedral’s application include recent building projects using locally sourced marble and stone, efficient underfloor heating and the use of recycled glass. Community engagement projects included hosting a BioBlitz event last year in partnership with Devon Wildlife Trust, which contributed valuable biodiversity data from the Cathedral grounds.
To qualify for A Rocha’s Eco Church award, churches and cathedrals must complete an online survey that focuses on five key areas of church life. These include worship and teaching, management of church buildings, management of church land, community and global engagement and lifestyle.
The award will be presented to Exeter Cathedral by The Right Revd Jackie Searle, Acting Bishop of Exeter, at a special Eco Church Celebration on Sunday 28 April. The Eco Church event is organised by the Creation Care Team at the Diocese of Exeter and will be focusing on what has been achieved so far across Devon. Environmental stalls, an inspiring talk led by Dave Bookless from A Rocha, along with Churches around the Diocese, will all be present at this magnificent event. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the Eco Church scheme with us.
