Exeter’s Historical Guildhall

Make the most of your day by visiting us and one of our local partners. Pupils will walk the two minutes from the Cathedral Green to the Historic Guildhall, which is claimed to be the oldest municipal building in England that is still in use.
- Discover the building’s history by going under the council chamber, where there is an early 14th century cellar. This was once a prison that was known as the “Pytt of the Guyldhall”.
- Learn about the building’s many uses over the past 600 years, including its use as a court and current regular uses for civic functions, full meetings of the City Council, official receptions, Mayoral banquets and exhibitions.
- Learn about the use of the main chamber and the displays on the wooden panelling.
After lunch, take a tour around Exeter Cathedral, on a curriculum linked theme of your choice, with one of our knowledgeable guides.
Class groups of 30+ are split into 2 smaller groups. You can book for up to 65 pupils per day on this tour package, with a minimum of 15.
Duration:
90 minutes at the Historic Guildhall 10:30am – 12pm
Lunch 12pm – 12:45pm (either on the Cathedral Green, in our Cloister Gardens, or at the Historic Guildhall, where a space will be provided)
Then approx. 90 minutes at the Cathedral, or until you need to leave to get back to school.
Tucker’s Hall
Suitable for: KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 & 5 (A-Level / Sixth Form)

Pupils will walk the seven minutes from the Cathedral Green to the historic Tuckers Hall, home to the City of Exeter’s important historic woollen cloth trade heritage. With 15th Century roof timber and Jacobean panelling; this building is one of the most important in the city’s financial history. Originally built as a chapel to act as a place of worship and a meeting place for guild activities, after the Reformation the religious aspect of Tucker’s Hall was dropped but remains of its past use can still be seen.
- Discover the building’s history, which dates back from 1471.
- Learn about the building’s many uses over the past 600 years, including the ancient hall of the still existing Incorporation of Weavers – Fullers and Shearmen – one of the craft guilds of Exeter.
- Enjoy viewing the introductory video, reading about the interesting facts, and seeing historic exhibits.
• Learn about the origin of some of our everyday phrases, all associated with the woollen cloth trade, and how this building played an important part in the financial affluence of the City and country.
After lunch, take a tour around Exeter Cathedral, on a curriculum linked theme of your choice, with one of our knowledgeable guides.
Class groups of 30+ are split into 2 smaller groups. You can book for up to 60 pupils in one space per day on this tour package, with a minimum of 20. Toilet facilities and secure bag storage will be available at both venues but please bear in mind that Tucker’s Hall is not accessibility friendly.
Duration: 90 minutes at Tucker’s Hall 10:30am – 12pm
Lunch 12pm – 12:45pm (either in a dedicated indoor space with a capacity of 35, on the Cathedral Green, in our Cloister Gardens, or at Tucker’s Hall, where a space will be provided)
Then approx. 90 minutes at the Cathedral, or until you need to leave to get back to school.
The Royal Albert Memorial Museum
Suitable for: EYFS, KS1, KS2 & KS3
Cost per Pupil: £5
Make the most of your day by visiting us and one of our local partners. Pupils walk 5 minutes from the Cathedral Green to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, where groups can go on a self-led tour and make use of the floor plan map to guide them around RAMM.
After lunch, take a tour around Exeter Cathedral, on a curriculum linked theme of your choice, with one of our knowledgeable guides.
This full day (10am – 2pm) package comes with a pre-made schedule for your school and the flexibility of visiting either RAMM first or the Cathedral, subject to availability. Please note that only self-led visits can be booked via this package for RAMM but your visit to Exeter Cathedral will come with a friendly and knowledgeable guide.
A maximum of 62 pupils/students will be allowed in The RAMM at one time. Teachers/lecturers and assistants are not included in this number. You are asked during your visit to split into smaller groups of 8-12 students, so that the whole group is not in the same public space/gallery within the museum at the same time.
At the Cathedral a maximum group size of 30 may enter at one time. You can book for up to 124 pupils per day on this tour package, with a minimum of 15.
Duration:
Two hours at The RAMM 10am – 12pm
Lunch 12pm – 1pm (either on the Cathedral Green, in our Cloister Gardens, or at The RAMM, where a space will be provided for a booking fee*)
Then approx. 60/90 minutes at the Cathedral 1pm – 2/2:30pm, or until you need to leave to get back to school.
Please be aware that the contact information you provide will be used to create an account on the RAMM’s booking system to facilitate the museum portion of your visit. School visits to RAMM are from 10am – 2pm Tuesday to Friday.
Joint Tour with Exeter Synagogue
Suitable for: Upper KS2, KS3 & KS4
Cost per Pupil: £5, includes full four hour timetable and lunch space
Make the most of your day by visiting us and one of our local partners. Pupils will walk five minutes from the Cathedral Green to the historic Exeter Synagogue, the third oldest in the UK.
- Discover the building’s history which dates back from 1764.
- Learn from a guide who explain why the Torah is so important
- See some of the late 19th Century scrolls
- Listen to readings of the book of numbers
- Learn about the shofar
Exeter’s 18th century synagogue is the third oldest still open in Britain and visits are welcome from Monday-Thursday between 10:30am and 2:30pm.
During your time at the synagogue a guide will cover a brief history of the building and its layout, and the differences between Orthodox and Reform/Liberal Judaism. The main focus of the visit would be on the Torah, and how Jewish customs and beliefs are rooted in it. Pupils will have the opportunity to see one of the scrolls and understand how services are delivered.
A guide will take them through the ‘rites of passage’ in Judaism (bar/bat mitzvah and weddings), as well as festivals, e.g., Chanukah and Rosh Hashanah.
This joint tour is linked to The Devon and Torbay Agreed RE Syllabus Unit 2.9 Why is the Torah so important to Jewish people? As well as Unit 1.8 What makes some places sacred to believers? GCSE groups are also welcome, and more specialist talks can be arranged with suitable notice.

Class groups of 30+ are split into two smaller groups. Minimum of 15 pupils to book, maximum of 65. Please note that no more than 45 pupils will be allowed in the Synagogue at one time.

90 minutes at the Synagogue 10:30am – 12pm
Lunch 12pm–12:45pm (either on the Cathedral Green or in our Cloister Gardens – indoor and outdoor options available. No food to be consumed at the Synagogue.)
Then approx. 90 minutes at the Cathedral, or until you need to leave to get back to school.
Joint Tour with Exeter Customs House
Suitable for: KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 & 5 (A-Level/Sixth Form)
Cost per Pupil: £5 Full Day (four hours) self-led at The Customs House or £7 guided at both The Customs House and Exeter Cathedral

- Discover the building’s history, which dates back from 1680/81.
- Learn from displays, illustrations and artefacts which bring the history and development of Exeter’s Quayside to life
- See models and items from the cloth industry such as “tenter hooks and tillet blocks”
- Watch an exciting audio-visual presentation “Exeter, 2000 years of history”, which highlights Exeter’s history from Roman times until today

Joint Tour with St Nicholas Priory: Medieval Monks to Tudor Townhouse

Make the most of your day by visiting us and one of our local partners. Pupils will walk 10 minutes from the Cathedral Green to St Nicholas Priory, to discover over 900 years of Exeter’s history.
Workshops can include:
- Religious History and Changes Over Time: The priory was home to Benedictine monks for over 400 years, and, transformed by the Reformations, it also housed a Catholic school in the 19th century
- Medieval Life: Explore religious life at the Priory and take a wider look at Medieval society
- Tudor Townhouse: Following the Reformation, the priory became home to wealthy local wool merchants. All aspects of Tudor life can be covered, including class differences, diets, games and more
- Local History: With over 900 years of local history, we can tailor workshops to cover your needs
After lunch, take a tour around Exeter Cathedral on a curriculum linked theme of your choice, with one of our knowledgeable guides.
Class groups of 30+ are split into two smaller groups. A minimum of 20 pupils is required to book this package, and a maximum of 65.
Duration: 90 minutes at the Priory 10:30am – 12pm.
Then lunch 12pm–12:45pm (a lunch space will be provided)

Sacred Places (Comparing a Cathedral to a Church) – Joint Tour of Exeter Cathedral and St Martin’s Church
Suitable for: KS1, KS2, KS3 & SEND
Duration: Flexible but typically two hours (45 minutes at each venue and time allowed for questions).
Cost per Pupil: £5 – price includes a donation to the charity The Churches Conservation Trust for the use of St Martin’s Church.
A unique opportunity to visit both Exeter Cathedral and the nearby Saxon church of St Martin’s. Pupils will begin at St Martin’s Church and then be taken across the Green to Exeter Cathedral to discover the differences between a church and a cathedral.
The lesson aligns with the Devon and Torbay Agreed Syllabus for RE: Unit 1.8 What makes some places sacred to believers? And can also be adapted for older groups to cover What links Christianity, Judaism and Muslim Beliefs? Students will explore visual stimuli such as 17th Century reredos and stained-glass windows displaying prophets such as Moses and Amos. The lesson also aligns with the Devon and Torbay Agreed Syllabus for RE: Upper KS2 Unit U2.8 What does it mean to be a Muslim in Britain today?, KS3 Unit 3.6 Why do Christians believe Jesus was God on earth? and KS3 Unit 3.4 Does the world need prophets today?
- Recognise that there are special places where people go to worship.
- Identify at least three objects used in worship.
- Explore through visual stimuli; the pulpit, altar and font.
- See both St Martin’s Church and Exeter Cathedral.
- Find out the similarities and differences between a church and a cathedral.

Please note that this tour requires a minimum of 15 pupils and has a maximum of 60.
A lunch space will be provided free of charge on request and bag storage and facilities can be used at the Cathedral. The tour can also include use of a designated quiet space to avoid sensory overload.
Exeter Quaker Meeting House
Suitable for: KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 & 5 (A-Level / Sixth Form)

Make the most of your day by visiting us and one of our local partners. Pupils will walk the nine minutes from the Cathedral Green to the Quaker Meeting House. Quakerism started in England in the second half of the 17th century, during the aftermath of the English Civil War.
In a school visit students and teachers will be able to:
Experience two and a half minutes of Quaker stillness.
Contrast this with other places of worship and compare it to the use of sacraments, music, and dress code that the cathedral practices.
Hear from a few Quakers who are trying to live with Simplicity, Truth, Equality, Peace, and Sustainability.
Decide, using evidence, whether Quakers “Let our lives speak.”

Class groups of 30+ are split into smaller groups. You can book for up to 90 pupils per day on this tour package, with a minimum of 10. Maximum capacity at The Meeting House of 45 at one time.
Duration:
90 minutes at The Quaker Meeting House 10:30am – 12pm
Lunch 12pm – 12:45pm (either on the Cathedral Green, in our Cloister Gardens, or at The Meeting House, where pupils are welcome to eat lunch outside in the Peace Garden or in the Meeting Room itself.
Then approx. 90 minutes at the Cathedral, or until you need to leave to get back to school.
Accessibility at The Quaker Meeting House:
The Meeting House has a ramp to the front door, lobby, main meeting room, disabled toilet, kitchen, and library. There is no lift to the first floor, basement, or Peace Garden.
There are 6 toilets. Two on the ground floor, one of which is a disabled toilet, three in the basement and one on the first floor.
