The Cycling Bishop of Exeter

On the day that the Tour de France, arguably the world’s most iconic cycling race, prepares for its Grand Départ, we thought that it would be a good time to share this press-cutting from the Library and Archives.

It shows Lord William Cecil, Bishop of Exeter 1916-1936, who was known as the “Cycling Bishop”. The article records his resolution, on his 72nd birthday, to give up cycling and instead to take an open-topped car (roof down at all times!)
