The Makin Review

The Makin Review

We are deeply disturbed by the findings of the recent Makin Review, subsequent testimonies and accounts of abuse. Our prayers are with all the victims and survivors of church-based abuse, including those affected by the abuses of John Smyth. Failures to protect Smyth’s victims over a number of decades, as highlighted in Keith Makin’s review, are of course shaming for the whole of the Church of England.

We are thankful for Archbishop Justin’s ministry, mission and leadership. His decision to resign demonstrates a clear commitment to place the interests of victims and survivors of abuse, ahead of those of the institution and leaders of the Church.

We continue, with renewed focus, to work tirelessly with the senior leadership of the Church of England, and independent organisations such as 31:8 and INEQE, to ensure Exeter Cathedral remains a safe and welcoming space for everyone.

Anyone who is affected by the Makin Review and would like confidential independent support, can contact the Safe Spaces Support Service on 030 0303 1056, or email [email protected]
