A brief history of the Church of England

A brief history of the Church of England

Tuesday 29 October, 7:30pm in Exeter Cathedral’s Sacristy

A brief history of the Church of England with Canon Professor Morwenna Ludlow.

The Church of England is often described as ‘catholic and reformed’ but what does that mean? How has each tradition come together in this unique way? And how does this affect the way in which members understand their church today? Using her experience as a church historian Morwenna will begin to sketch out some answers to these questions and she will suggest some ways in which we might all deepen our understanding of the Church of England and its historical contexts.

Morwenna Ludlow is Professor of Christian History and Theology at the University of Exeter and Canon Theologian at Exeter Cathedral. She specialises in the theology of Christians in the Roman Empire and she studies how it has been used by later generations, including Anglicans today. Among her books is The Early Church (2008). Her current project ‘God and Good Speech in Early Christianity’ looks at how Christians reflected on the ethics and theology of how to speak well, drawing on the Bible and classical rhetorical training.
