Warming Winter Recital

Friday 15 November at 7:30pm

Join us for an unforgettable concert with the Exeter Cathedral Choir Association, in the magnificent setting of Exeter Cathedral.

The first half of the concert will include performances from internationally renowned opera singers (and Exeter Cathedral Chorister parents) Madeleine Shaw, Eamonn Mulhall, Tim Mirfin and flautist Ellen Wiles, accompanied by Exeter Cathedral’s Director of Music, Timothy Noon. The programme will include music of Mahler, Fauré, Tosti and Brahms.

For the second half of the concert we will welcome the back-row of the Exeter Cathedral Choir! The Cathedral Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars will enthral the audience with a very special performance.

 

Madeleine Shaw

Mezzo-soprano Madeleine Shaw studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the National Opera Studio. A former member of the Young Singer’s Programme at English National Opera, she enjoys great success both on the concert and operatic stage.

Madeleine’s recent engagements include her debut at the Opéra national de Paris as Aufseherin Elektra; Rita The Handmaid’s Tale and Fricka Das Rheingold at ENO; and Marcellina Le nozze di Figaro at Glyndebourne.

Further concert engagements include appearances with the London Symphony Orchestra; Royal Scottish National Opera; BBC National Orchestra of Wales; London Philharmonic Orchestra; Northern Sinfonia and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Eamonn Mulhall

Irish tenor, Eamonn Mulhall, has sung in Peter Grimes La Fenice Venice; Amadeus National Theatre London; Salomé, La cenerentola Wexford; Dorian Gray Bratislava, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Dido & Aeneas, Messiah English National Opera; Clemency Covent Garden; Hippolyte et Aricie Kraków; Turandot Belfast; Tristan und Isolde, Kaiser von Atlantis, Acis & Galatea, Fidelio, Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, Madama Butterfly, Carmen and Werther Irish National Opera.

Future engagements include Die Liebe der Danae at Teatro Carlo Felice, Genova.

 

Tim Mirfin

As a bass soloist, Tim’s  wide concert repertoire extends from the familiar; Bach, Brahms, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Rossini and Verdi oratorios, to modern premieres and baroque rarities. He has given concerts and recitals in various international venues, including Amsterdam’s Conzertgebouw, Vienna Musikverein, Melbourne Town Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, Usher Hall Edinburgh and cathedrals and churches throughout the UK. He read Law at Cambridge, studying postgraduate singing at the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio.

As well as solo work, he teaches singing, gives choral and vocal masterclasses, lectures for the Arts Society on opera and the voice, and runs a local community choir.

Ellen Wiles

Ellen Wiles is a novelist, sound artist, and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Exeter. She previously worked as a barrister and as a flautist. She read Music at the University of Oxford where she was awarded the Gibbs Prize, studied flute at the Royal Academy of Music, and was an LSO Young Musician of the Year finalist (an extremely long time ago). Her new novel, The Unexpected, will be published on 21 November 2024. Her website is www.ellenwiles.com.
