Exploring the Archives: More Than Medieval

Exploring the Archives: More Than Medieval

Thursday 7 November, 1pm-3pm in Exeter Cathedral’s Library & Archives’ Reading Room

Ten Centuries of Record-keeping at Exeter Cathedral

Widely celebrated for its extensive collection of medieval documents relating to Exeter Cathedral, this event is a chance to explore the full scope of the Cathedral’s Archives – from the earliest Saxon charters written on parchment, all the way through to 21st century documents which only exist in digital form. What sorts of records can be found in the collections today, how and why have they been preserved, and what are some of the challenges involved in caring for such a wide-ranging collection in the long term?

At this small group session you will gain an overview of the range of document types in the Exeter Cathedral Archives, and the history of its record-keeping practices. There will be plenty of opportunity for friendly discussion as well as reading and handling of original documents.

This event is running in celebration of World Digital Preservation Day.
