Misericord Design Challenge

Send us your very own Modern Misericord design and you could see your creation brought to life as a carved seat in our new Treasures Gallery exhibition space.

Misericords, also known as ‘mercy seats’, are tip-up seats that priests used to lean on during long services. They often featured detailed carvings of scenes of every day life, animals, nature and mythical beasts. We want you to give your design a modern twist to make it unique to you. In your design, why not show an activity you enjoy or something important to you.

Submission Deadline: Monday 14 October 2024

Four designs will be chosen to be made into misericords. One design being chosen from each of the following categories; primary school, secondary school, college and 18+.

Creators of the winning designs will have the opportunity to:

  • Join clay and woodcarving workshops to help bring their designs to life.
  • Have your design hand-carved in oak by woodcarver, William Barsley.
  • See your Modern Misericord displayed in Exeter Cathedral’s new Treasures Gallery exhibition space.
