Reed’s Revelation: Exeter Cathedral’s Summer Play on the Green

Monday 29 July, Monday 5 August, Monday 12 August, Monday 19 August and Monday 26 August, 2pm–2:15pm followed by free craft activities

Exeter was bombed in April and May 1942 as part of the ‘Baedeker raids’ of the Second World War – an air raid campaign which targeted cultural and historical sites in the UK. Five English cities were chosen: Exeter, Bath, Canterbury, Norwich, and York. On 4 May 1942, a high explosive bomb hit Exeter Cathedral, completely destroying its Chapel of St James.

Set a few days before the strike on Exeter Cathedral, Reed’s Revelation is based on the fascinating story of Devon craftsman, Herbert Reed, whose dream and subsequent warnings to the Dean of Exeter, led to a remarkable effort to save the cathedral’s famous medieval Bishop’s Throne canopy from imminent destruction.
