Summer Activities on the Green

Summer Activities on the Green

Every Monday 29 July – 26 August 2024, 2:15pm-4:15pm

Enjoy FREE summer activities on Cathedral Green.

Monday 29 July – Paint your own Illuminated Letter
Copy, design and paint your own unique illuminated letter. Why not add a medieval beast or flowers as decoration? Then finally add a touch of gold. Your letter could be framed to keep or given as a present.

Monday 5 August – Rag Rug Making
Come and learn the traditional rag rug technique known as ‘proddy’ with rag rug artist Sally Light (aka Bodkin Beak). Using beautiful waste fabrics and Sally’s homemade tools, create a miniature rag rug sample to take home with you! No experience required!

Monday 12 August – Double Elephant Paper and Print Project: Make Your Own Piece of Handmade Paper
Come and make your own piece of handmade paper! Using an A5 paper mould with a deckle edge, you will form the paper from pulp. Pass it through the presses until it is dry enough to handle, and then print a plant, a leaf or cut shape of your own design onto the finished paper. Some of the paper will contain wild flower seeds so you can take it home to plant in your garden. This is an activity for all ages and abilities.

Monday 19 August – Medieval Tile Making

Come and learn how to make a miniature tile which you can decorate with your own design and take home.

Discover how traditional medieval tiles were made and how they changed cathedrals floors from dull stone or beaten earth to a golden glow! Each design has had a meaning, a griffin represented protection from evil, a five-pointed star hope and a lion courage and strength.

Monday 26 August – Woodcarving Demonstrations

Join William Barsley, a traditional woodcarver, for exciting woodcarving demonstrations that merge historical craftsmanship with modern creativity.

Delve into the traditional art of misericords, medieval carvings found in church choir stalls, and have the rare opportunity to give carving a try for yourself with William’s guidance. You will also have the chance to design and submit your own Modern Misericord, as part of our challenge where four winning designs (one design chosen from the following categories; primary school, secondary school, college and ages 18+) will be carved and brought to life for display in our new Treasures Gallery exhibition space.

Our summer activities are part of the Exeter Cathedral Activity Plan kindly supported by The National Heritage Fund.
